About Mark Vanderhoff

My Background

My wife and I moved to Asheville from the Reno-Lake Tahoe region of Nevada. When we decided to move back East to be closer to our families in Kentucky, we began searching for a culturally diverse mountain town with the outdoors recreation opportunities we enjoyed out West. We sure did find what we were looking for!

In a previous life, I worked as a newspaper reporter, covering crime and the state legislature in Kentucky, and then writing about outdoors recreation around Lake Tahoe. I continue to write and have been published in local publications and national magazines such as Plenty and the Utne Reader.

I decided to become a real estate agent for several reasons: I love helping people, care about the environment and development issues, and saw a real need for service-oriented agents who put their client's needs above everything else.

My Mission

When my wife and I were younger, we had a bad experience with a financial advisor who didn't take us seriously. Perhaps it was our youth, or maybe that we weren't extremely wealthy. Either way, I decided I would never treat people differently based on their age or income level.

Although I help all types of people with all kinds of real estate needs, I specialize in helping young clients and first-time homebuyers. It's my goal to help 50 first-time homebuyers purchase their own homes in 5 years.

I also specialize in green building, and promote parks and land preservation. My passion for the Great Outdoors has convinced me that we need to protect the environment and set aside places strictly for nature and recreation. You can read my column on green building in the Asheville Citizen-Times. A portion of my commission from every sale goes to various non-profits working to preserve the beauty of Western North Carolina, and every client gets a membership to the local land conservancy at closing.

My Client-First Philosophy

Everyone knows what good service "feels like," but some people just don't know enough or care enough to actually offer good service.

That said, in my experience as an Asheville real estate professional, I have found that providing the very best service is essentially about putting my clients first. This means being a good listener as well as a good communicator, keeping myself accessible, and responding quickly to your needs.

This "client first" philosophy has always been my approach and it requires me to continually improve my skills and ways of doing business. In addition, I've found that the latest technologies are enabling me to do everything real estate agents always done, only much more quickly and efficiently. They've also helped me to extend the range of services I provide to my clients.

I love what I do! When you decide that you'd like to buy or sell a home in the Asheville area, please contact me.
